ESL | Traffic Lights

CHATTER is to be expected in any classroom, it’s unavoidable. The challenge is in controlling it!

FOR the longest time, I’ve been using the classic finger on the lips gesture, and I’ve seen teachers use specific calls or hand claps. There’s a million and one ways to do it, and my CT and I are going to try something new. A traffic light system.

SO, to the drawing board I went, whipped up a template and came out with this hand drawing (download below):

After some printing, laminating, tracing, cutting, sticking and another round of laminating, I had this:

The idea is simple, as I’m sure you can see. The arrow can be moved up and down the board to let the class know how loud they are being. From there, how you use it is entirely up to you! Here are some ideas:

  • Adding time wasted onto the end of the lesson
  • Adding to or giving homework
  • For timed challenges between classes, adding a time penalty

Do you already use a traffic light system? How do you use it? Comment below and let me know!
