This Months Bests |January-February 2018

I got round to this so late into January that I decided to group January and February, and even then it’s still late. This is no bad thing, however, as these are two months in the Korean school calendar that are a mess of activity and change, and it’s a relief to be settling down into routine once more!

HEADLINE OF THE MONTH

My favourite headline of the last two months has to be January’s: ‘Night Of The Blunt Stiletto‘. As a History graduate, the parallel to the infamous Night Of The Long Knives is inescapable, and cleverly done. I haven’t forgotten this headline, it’s stuck with me since the day I read it!

FOOD / DRINK

The effort to eat healthily is forever on-going. The last two months I’ve been oscillating between the Veggie-Egg Scramble shared by Merrick’s Art, and simple Korean dishes taught to me by my Korean bestie!

BOOKS

It’s been all about comfort reading… January and February have been cold. So cold the fingers haven’t been warm enough to type! It’s not cool! Out with the vampire-themed series’s I’ve been re-reading, I’ve not expanded to much else recently!

SCHOOL

Camp came and went. It got off to a slow start, but as soon as my students grasped the concept of using what language they had to explain the meaning of English words rather than directly translating them, they flew with the confidence of knowing that they understood a lot more English than they’d given themselves credit for. They also really enjoyed horrible histories! I’m really glad I was able to share a part of my childhood and education with them!

In other school news, I’ve moved desks. I used to hang out in the English room – that was where my desk was. Alas, due to the Korean system with regards to which elementary school you can attend, our school is more than maxed out! The subject rooms have all been re-purposed as homerooms to match the ever increasing student population. This means I’m not down in one of the teachers rooms. I’m sharing with the rest of the English teachers and the after school coordinator. I’m pretty stoked about it, and the desk space is incredible to me!

EDIT: After moving everything OUT of the old English room, we had to go right ahead and move it all back IN two days later! It gave us a great opportunity to get rid of and organise what we had, so taking it as a positive!

TV / FILM

Disaster struck at the beginning of February. The laptop AND the external hard drive died. While the laptop is an easy fix and just one of those things, the external hard drive got me bad! As of writing this, the contents recovery is still up in the air… My work is backed up in several places. What I’ve potentially lost is a lot of music, movies and TV shows.

With the knowledge I was going to be spending several weeks sans laptop, I decided to bite the bullet and invest in chromecast! This was a good decision, even if Korea (or the US/UK) are a pissy about what streaming sites I can and can’t access. Thankfully, Nexflix Korea is expanding it’s content fairly rapidly, and FRIENDS made it on there a few weeks back. I also delved into the K-Drama’s and picked up where I’d left off in Cheo-Yong (detective who can see ghosts!)

ACTIVITY

It’s been a quiet few months (Olympics, what?) and I’ve pretty much just hunkered down and tried to keep warm. I love cold weather, but I do not like being cold. At all. And it’s been a very cold few weeks!

CRAFT

Due to moving desks, there has been minimal crafting recently. There was a surge at the end of February as I worked to get everything ready for the beginning of the new school year.

MUSIC

We’re only two months into 2018 and already there has been so much good music it’s insane.

First off, we got Infinite doing Infinite and giving us Tell Me, and a full album. There I was thinking, already, that this was going to be a hard tune to top.

Then mere weeks later, iKon go and drop Love Scenario, which is, in my opinion, the best iKon release ever. This wasn’t going to be topped.

How wrong was I!

Seventeen thought it would be a good idea to release a repackage of Teen, Age with four new songs. Thanks is INCREDIBLE. And the dance… is something else. Seventeen never disappoint, and the growth and progression in their music and skill is incredible to watch. These are 13 diversely talented guys!

FASHION & BEAUTY

Fashion & Beauty

Sweaters…. all the sweaters… Knitwear is King this time of year. Although the weather is warming up deliciously outside, inside school it’s still decidedly on the chilly side.

MISC.

The last two months had been one of super hibernation, so I’ve not go much to go in here. My new bullet journal layouts have been featuring lots of washi tape, so I’ve been loving that. I’ve also been experimenting with all sorts of markers and watercolour techniques, so my touch markers and crayola supertips have been in constant use! (If you couldn’t guess from the new post images 🙂
